Specialist Speech and Language Therapy for Stammering
Speech Therapy for Children Who Stammer / Stutter
Specialist Speech and Language Therapy for Stammering
If your child stammers (also called stuttering), you may be worried about how it affects their confidence, learning, and everyday communication. At North West Speech & Language Therapy, we offer specialist stammering therapy for children and young people, delivered by highly trained Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs).
Our SLTs have completed additional training in stammering, using trusted approaches supported by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), Stamma (the British Stammering Association), and the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering.
What is Stammering?
Stammering is a speech difference where sounds, words, or sentences may be repeated, stretched, or “stuck.” It often starts in early childhood, usually between the ages of 2 and 5 years. While some children’s stammering disappears naturally, others benefit from specialist speech therapy to reduce its impact and build confidence.
According to the RCSLT, around 8% of children experience stammering at some point. For some, it may come and go. For others, it may be longer-lasting and affect speaking in class, joining in with friends, or expressing ideas clearly.
Why Choose a Specialist Stammering Speech Therapist?
Not all SLTs specialise in stammering. Working with a therapist who has completed additional training offers clear advantages:
In-depth knowledge – Specialist SLTs understand the different patterns of stammering and the best ways to support each child.
Proven, evidence-based approaches – We use therapies recommended by the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering, including Palin Parent–Child Interaction Therapy (PCI) for younger children, and confidence-building, resilience, and communication strategies for older children and teenagers.
Personalised therapy – Every child’s stammer is different. We adapt therapy to your child’s needs, personality, and goals.
Family involvement – Parents and carers are a vital part of therapy. We provide coaching and strategies so you can support your child at home.
As Stamma highlight, there is no single “cure” for stammering but therapy can make a huge difference in helping children feel confident, capable, and positive about speaking.
What Does Stammering Therapy Involve?
When you book an appointment with us, you can expect:
Assessment
A relaxed, child-friendly session where we explore how your child communicates, the nature of their stammer, and how it affects everyday life.
Individual Therapy Plan
Together, we agree on goals tailored to your child. Therapy may focus on:
Making speech feel easier and less effortful
Building confidence and reducing anxiety about talking
Helping family and teachers understand how best to support your child
Flexible Sessions Online or In Person
In-person therapy is interactive and play-based, ideal for younger children.
Online therapy for stammering works brilliantly for families further away or can be used for approaches like Palin PCI.
Ongoing Review
We monitor progress and adapt therapy as your child grows, ensuring support remains effective and relevant.
The Benefits of Early Support
Research shows that early stammering intervention makes a big difference. Seeking help early can:
Reduce the chances of stammering becoming long-term
Boost your child’s confidence at home, in school, and with friends
Prevent frustration or negative feelings about speaking
Even if you are unsure whether your child needs therapy, an assessment with a specialist SLT can give you reassurance and clear strategies.
